Dragon Lore: A collection of writings about dragons and winged beasts

Kirstin has complied here a short selection of some of the wisdom about dragons that she has attained over her years of studying this fantastic, yet rarely seen beast.

This dragon artwork 'Fragile' by Kirstin Mills captures the magic of a tiny dragon as it clings tightly to a reed in the swaying breezes

Dragons are another of the elemental creatures that have existed in mythology and tales from the earliest times. Lithe and leviathan, many link them back to an age of dinosaurs, when winged reptiles soared the skies. Dragons vary in description and size across the cultures that report them: most however agree on certain serpentine, or at least reptilian, features and magical powers. Two of the most common images of dragons that survive in modern culture are the European and Chinese dragons. The European dragons often have wings and, like their Chinese relatives, have the ability to breathe, or live in, fire. In most cultures, dragons represent a primal force: an ancient wisdom associated with an earth long forgotten: the powers of nature in full animal force.

Today dragons have retreated into the twilight world of faerie along with other magical creatures and strange beings. Yet, like fairies themselves, they can also be seen or felt in secluded places, particularly in areas away from human habitation. Have you ever watched steam curl and rise from the depths of a tree-filled valley? Or have you ever wondered what lies behind the clouds surrounding the peaks of mountains on an otherwise clear day? Perhaps you have seen a slither of a tail or a glint of a reptilian eye among the leaves as you entered a forest or wood? These are the dragons that Kirstin likes to portray in her artworks: the tiny, fragile little creatures small enough to slip beyond human notice, hiding easily amongst the wood and leaves of nature's refuges. They blend in so easily with their surroundings, yet they are also extremely quick-moving, making them extremely difficult to find and even more so to capture an image of. Kirstin preserves the images of these little beasts in her artworks, such as the one above, which can be seen as recordings of some very fortunate sightings of these little creatures.
