The native animals of Australia are some of the most
rare, unique and beautiful in the world. Isolated
for many thousands of years on a lone continent,
they have a magic and a spirit all of their own that
makes them very special for an Australian artist
like Kirstin Mills. From the moment she could run
around outside in the bushland surrounding where she
lived, Kirstin has loved the Australian landscape
and the creatures it holds. From cackling
Kookaburras, boisterous Possums and snuffling
Echidnas to beautiful Red Kangaroos, shy wallabies
and long, climbing goannas, these unique and
wonderful creatures have inhabited Kirstin's
imagination and entered her art where ever they
could. Growing up near the bush and surrounded by
Australian tales of the Gumnut babies (bush fairies
by May Gibbs), Blinky Bill (an adventurous Koala by
Dorothy Wall) and other wonderful stories that grasped an
Australian imagination that stretched back through
the centuries, Kirstin has come to have a deep love
and respect for the animals of the country she
proudly calls home. She loves to incorporate them
into her artworks and often uniquely shows many
Australian fairies and dragons amongst their more
everyday companions. She is also a big supporter of
the many wonderful organisations throughout
Australia and the world that work toward the
preservation of this fragile environment. Too many
of the beautiful Australian native animals are now
endangered, and some have even become extinct, never
to share their magic and wonderful spirit again. By
keeping our environment clean and healthy for these
creatures, and by supporting the wonderful wildlife
programs that exist to protect them, Kirstin
believes that we can ensure a continued future with
these unique and incredible animals. The same can be
said for native animals of all countries, and
Kirstin's heart is deeply drawn to animals of all
kinds. Without voices of their own to defend
themselves with, Kirstin believes that it is up to
us to stand for the creatures that so often get
taken for granted, often until it is too late.
